It’s no surprise that the kangaroo – Australia’s most iconic symbol – is closely linked to the Anglesea Golf Club. Eastern Grey kangaroos have lived in the area for thousands of years and have become a defining feature of the course since it was established in 1950.
Once roaming farm paddocks, today around 300 kangaroos live on or near the manicured fairways. Remarkably, they coexist peacefully with golfers, having adapted to the daily activity over the decades. Now, they’re not just part of the scenery – they’re a tourist attraction in their own right, drawing up to 5,000 visitors annually. Kangaroo tours run daily using motorized carts, guided by knowledgeable local volunteers. The mobs, typically groups of 40, are most active in the late afternoon and often seen lounging in the shade or feeding on grass around the course edges. During breeding season, joeys are a visitor highlight.
Anglesea’s kangaroos – Macropus giganteus – have also been the focus of research by the University of Melbourne since 2004, helping scientists understand their behaviour, reproduction, and interaction with the environment. For our visitors the chance to observe these iconic animals in such a unique setting is unforgettable.
Whilst every effort is made by Anglesea Golf Club to ensure tour participants will see Kangaroos there are no guarantees.
